American Black Bears live in the wooded areas of North America and the plateau regions of Mexico. They can reach a length of 6.5 feet and weight between 200 and 300 pounds. Their thick, long coat provides insulation from the cold and heat. Black bears live an average of 25 years. Bears hibernate in rock cavities, in holes dug in the earth, or behind dense foliage. They are very shy, but inquisitive creatures. They eat just about anything ranging from grass, roots, berries, insects, fish and other mammals. If you happen to see a black bear please do not feed them. This usually ends up in them being shot due to a loss of fear of humans.
